Why Werk24 Detects Large Threads up to M150 Now

Introduction

At Werk24, our mission is to transform technical drawings into structured engineering data you can rely on. To do this, we continuously refine the balance between robust automation and engineering reasonableness. One example of this is the way we handle large metric threads.

Until recently, our detection engine had a maximum supported thread diameter of 100 mm. Any callout beyond that was not recognized. This limit reflected common industry practice: the majority of standardized ISO metric threads end well before M100, and only specialized industries (e.g. heavy machinery, shipbuilding, or pressure vessels) go larger.

Why the Change?

Over the past months, we’ve heard from customers in industries where large-scale threads are not only real, but business-critical. Engineers working on turbines, heavy flanges, and large-diameter pressure vessels often specify threads in the M120–M150 range. For these use cases, our previous 100 mm cut-off was too restrictive.

By extending the maximum supported thread size to M150, Werk24 now captures a broader spectrum of technical reality while maintaining the data quality standards our customers expect.

Balancing Realism and Reliability

Why not allow detection up to infinity? Two reasons:

1. Practicality in manufacturing

  • Beyond M150, threaded fasteners become extremely rare. Designers usually switch to flanges, shrink fits, or welds.

  • Tooling and torque requirements for threads larger than M150 make them impractical for most workshops.

2. Data quality

  • Allowing unbounded detection risks picking up OCR or drawing noise as "phantom threads."

  • By keeping an upper bound that reflects real-world practice, we help ensure your extracted data is trustworthy.

What This Means for You

  • Improved coverage: Drawings that include large threads up to M150 are now parsed and recognized automatically.

  • Fewer manual corrections: No more wondering why a perfectly valid M120 thread was missing from your dataset.

  • Consistent reliability: You continue to benefit from Werk24’s safeguards against unlikely or erroneous callouts.

Looking Ahead

Werk24’s philosophy is to evolve with the needs of the engineering community. By listening to your feedback and observing standards across industries, we continuously refine our extraction logic. The new M150 limit is one more step in making technical drawings more accessible, accurate, and actionable.
