Projection Methods: Need to Know to Convert 3D Ideas into 2D Drawings
Projection Methods describe how the 3D object is projected onto the 2D drawing.
Different Markets use different methods (e.g., US vs EU).
Ignoring the need to understand Projection Methods will result in ‘mirrored’, i.e., useless parts.
Orthographic Projection
Orthographic projections are used to convert 3D ideas into 2D drawings that effectively describe the design and feature of the object, so the object can be documented and manufactured. It is generally easier to visualize a 3-D picture of an object than to visualize a 2-D drawing. In mechanical drafting, it is very common to prepare completely dimensioned detail drawings using 2-D views, also called Orthographic Projections.
There are two main types of projection methods that are in use. The third-angle projection method is mainly used in the United States. The First-angle projection method is commonly used in other countries.
First Angle Projection Method
The basic idea of the first-angle projection method can be simply described as, the viewer looking at the 3-D object and projects the view on a plane behind the object.
Third Angle Projection Method
The basic idea of the third-angle projection method can be simply described as, the viewer looking at the 3-D object and projects the view on a plane in front of the object.
